Problem:
You are currently sitting within one of the bigger players within the design consultancy industry, you are a bit of a go-getter and are struggling with the restraints of your role. You want exposure to other areas, more autonomy and trust....
Solution:
This company is mid tier in size which enables you the autonomy to make decisions and run your civil projects and team how you would like.
This is not a pure management, supervision and training role- you will, at times, operate autonomously as this is a very technical and hands on role.
With autonomy comes, responsibility as well as exposure to other elements of the business.
There is, as usual, the mentoring and training of a dedicated Civil team of Civil designers who are eager to increase their skills.
Not your usual 9-5 work day, work 8-6 and get Fridays off.

Civil Engineer Subdivisions Up to $128K 5 year growth plan?
Senior Civil Engineer
Contribute to 5 year growth plan to take advantage of revived market in 2010 onwards.
This will involve weekly management meetings to develop strategies to win business from niche property developers in ACT.
Current order book strong in excess of 11 projects.
Current work has been through industry reputation as a specialist in land development and they have retained 95% of clients in last 18 months.
Act as client interface with clients on contract management and design specification.
Act as 2 In charge to Principal to cover for his duties when he is unavailable.
Equity option based on ability to market the firm outside of usual clients and bringing in fees.
5+ years experience in land development with a reputable consultancy. Design and project management experience and Civil Engineering Degree essential.

Senior Civil Engineer $150-135K Smaller firm with big dreams!
With around 7 years local Australian experience you now have 2 choices. Stay with a big consultancy and know exactly what projects you will be doing over the next few years, know exactly what your next pay review and bonus will be, and know exactly when your next promotion will be (hopefully!). Or you could take control of your in this boutique sized firm run by Directors from various top tier firms around Australia who are winning classy high profile projects.
Forget the red tape, decisions are made on a daily. While you will employed for your strong pavements and roads engineering experience, it will be expected that you enjoy broadening your experience base where possible. This is almost a junior management role as you can mentor graduates and lead designers and drafters. Take projects from detailed avaluation to preliminary and detailed design right through to construction supervision. These will include greenfields projects and major upgrades and rehabilitation projects.
But (there is always a but!).... as corny as it sounds this role will not suit someone who is rigid and needs regular direction and supervision, or just wants a standard 9-5 job. While the hours are very reasonable, to enjoy the excellent salary and lucrative bonuses a reall go-getter is needed for this role to put in the work needed. The support struture ia in place should you wish to move into a management role in the future.

Civil Engineer Subdivisions $106K-$89K Progression push?
Sometimes it just takes the right mentor and a company who is willing to give you the training and development you need to propel your career to the next level.
I have witnessed Engineers grow from Intermediate to Senior level in less than a year simply because they have had the support and technical knowledge passed down from a dedicated mentor who exposes them to the higher level skills they need to start managing projects independently and taking a couple of junior under their wing.
